In a healthy gut the walls are home to the bacteria which start breaking down food. In the gut walls our immune system is meant to function strongly to begin defending us against invaders. These walls also release enzymes, acids and important chemicals which break down foods into nutrients. These nutrients then travel back through healthy walls into the blood to arrive where they are needed in the body.
